How can you get a Learners License in Tamil Nadu?
One who completed 16 years (for a two-wheeler with engine capacity not exceeding 50cc) or 18 years otherwise, can apply for LLR online. You can select your RTO/MVI office with the help of Pincode in Vahan portal. LLR can be applied either directly through a web portal or through recognized driving schools. The online portal is self-guided and fill up all information required. One can upload all the necessary documents such as address proof, age proof, etc in online.

What are the Documents Required to get a Learners License?
- Medical Certificate in Form 1-A.
- Application cum Declaration as to the Physical Fitness Form-1.
- Three Copies of Passport size Photo
- Proof of age (Any one of the following).

What if you fail in Preliminary Test?
If the applicant failed in the Learner License test, he/she can reappear for the test on the next day onwards after paying the necessary fees.
Is it compulsory to obtain the learner certificate from a training school?
- No, In the case of private or non-commercial vehicles, it is not compulsory.
- However, In the case of commercial vehicles, it is compulsory because the Motor Driving School has to issue Form No.5 for commercial driving license.
Exemptions from Learners License
Please note that applicants who are already having a driving license from any state government licensing authority or defense licensing authority or any abroad licensing authority are exempted from appearing the test.

How can you get a Permanent Driving License in Tamil Nadu?
To Drive Non-Transport vehicle, Two Wheeler and LMV, the applicant has to appear for test of competence to drive (Driving skill Test) by individually or through recognised Driving Schools before the Motor Vehicle Inspector. The data already entered and document uploaded for LLR can be used for getting DL in Portal, but a fee has to be paid by online itself.
Driving license will be issued for 20 years from the date of issue or up to 40 years of age whichever is earlier for non-transport vehicles and in case of transport vehicle, it will be valid for three (3) years from the date of issue.
The Motor vehicles Inspector will conduct the test of competence to drive vehicle as per the procedures laid down under the rule 15 of Central Motor Vehicle Rules,1989. After satisfaction about the driving skills, the testing authority will pass the order for issue of driving licence.
Once applicant clears driving test, Driving License will be issued by the Asst. Licensing Authority after capturing of bio-metrics including Photograph.
If the applicant failed in driving the test, they can appear again for re-test after 7 days. If the applicant does not pass even after three driving tests, he shall not be qualified to reappear for such a test before 60 days.

- Documents of the vehicle in which the applicant proposes to appear for test of competence to drive (such as valid Registration Certificate, Insurance Certificate, Tax Card, Pollution under Control Certificate).
- Form 5 and Form 15 (only for those who have undergone training in a Driving School).
- Fees for a single class is Rs 800 and for double class is Rs 1100 only
How can you get a dupicate driving license in Tamil Nadu?
Duplicate Driving License can be obtained in case of Lost, Mutilation, Destroyed or Torn of existing license. Applicant should intimate loss or destruction of driving license with Police and get Certificate from police. The applicant can apply for duplicate license in online and make necessary fees also in online. Relevant documents to be uploaded in online. Then applicant should appear in person at the Regional Transport Office / MVI office with acknowledgement generated at the end application process.

- Police Certificate obtained from the online portal of Police Department
- Affidavit sworn in before the Notary (for having not misused the DL or if found in the future will be returned to the concerned RTO).
- In the case of mutilated/soiled/torn driving licence such licence has to be surrendered along with the application form.
- Fees for Duplicate License in Rs. 500 only
How can you I renew my Driving License in Tamil Nadu?
Application for renewal of driving license can be made within 30 days from the date of expiry of validity. DL holders of heavy transport vehicles should undergo a one-day refresher course as per the Government Notification at the approved driving schools.
The applicant who wants the renewal of his / her license has to apply online. Necessary fees can be paid online. Documents can also be uploaded online.
The driving license will be renewed for a period of five years in respect of Non-Transport Vehicle and three years for Transport vehicles. If the driving license expired more than 5 years ago, a fresh driving test will be conducted for the renewal of the License.

- Medical Certificate in Form1-A ( in case of the applicant who obtained Non-transport vehicle DL has completed the age of 40 years old or holder having valid DL for transport vehicle ).

- The fees of renewal of transport vehicle driving license is Rs. 450 and the fees of renewal of non-transport vehicle driving license is Rs. 500
How to get an Additional Class in my Existing Driving License in Tamil Nadu?
For additional class of driving license, (i.e including one more class of vehicle like Motor cycle license holder wants to drive LMV can be added in his/her existing DL), a person should have a valid driving license. An application can be made via Online and fee also will be paid through online. The same procedure to be followed for the test of competence to drive for additional class of vehicle by appearing before the Motor Vehicles Inspector.

How do I change my address in my Driving License in Tamil Nadu?
If any existing DL holder wants to change existing address in his/her DL, it can be carried out through online portal. Applicant has to apply in online, make required fees in online and upload relevant documents are also in online.

How to get an International Driving Permit from Tamil Nadu
Indian citizens who want to drive a motor vehicle in Foreign countries and wish to drive a vehicle there, your Indian Driving Licence is valid, provided it is accompanied by an International Driving Permit (IDP).
